Productivity and safety are two major concerns in the mining industry. Both can benefit from incorporating GPS/GNSS into the equipment being used on a surface mine site. Heavy machinery is used in mining to explore and develop sites, to break and remove rocks of various hardness and toughness, to remove and stockpile ore and waste. Especially in large open pit mines, pit and dump maps can be made in real time and can be transferred directly to the on-board computers in the equipment. With differential GPS equipment on board, the control center can quickly determine exact coordinates of a given piece of equipment with accuracy of less than a meter and to assess where the ore can be found, how to efficiently move the material (ore or waste), and what are the safety zones for operation. GPS/GNSS can significantly reduce material overages and dramatically improving productivity and profitability while optimizing safety for the workers.
