Trimble Acquires Fidelity Comtech to Expand its Communications Solutions

SUNNYVALE, Calif., Jan. 12, 2015–Trimble (NASDAQ: TRMB) announced today that it has acquired privately-held Fidelity Comtech Inc., (FCI) a leading provider of extended wireless solutions that enable efficient business processes and can be used in both the cellular and Wi-Fi spectrums. The acquisition increases Trimble's broad portfolio of technologies and solutions that complement existing ones in industrial markets including oil & gas, mining, transportation (maritime ports, rail yards, trucking facilities) and large-scale construction operations.

FCI has developed a patented adaptive technology that optimizes coverage in wireless networks with hardware and software that creates a self-optimizing wireless network through coordinated small-cell beamforming (the ability to enhance and focus wireless networks through the use of multiple low-power smart antennas). Beamforming allows a network provider/operator to shape the coverage afforded by multiple smart antennas. The network benefits from relieved network congestion with extended range and load balancing; reduced interference from other networks; maximized coverage in high-use areas; enabled remote real-time configuration and electronic adjustment.

FCI has four main products that enable adaptive networks.
Phocus Array: It is an industrial-grade wireless access point with a smart antenna that optimizes wireless coverage in harsh environments.
Phased Array Antennas: A line of rugged smart antennas optimized for mobile applications with embedded GPS. Coverage by these antennas can also be steered, shaped and independently controlled to suit individual applications.
eCone: A wireless network client with internal GPS to enable monitoring of vehicular networks with real-time positioning data.
NetWatch: A web-enabled application that measures and displays the location of mobile equipment and network link quality.

"With the addition of FCI, Trimble continues to strengthen its commitment to provide a complete portfolio of communication solutions,” said Jürgen Kliem, vice president of Trimble's strategy and business development. “FCI will allow Trimble to build more comprehensive and capable communication solutions for its existing markets as well as expansion into new markets.”

“FCI has been dedicated to expanding its offerings in the wireless networking arena,” said Joe Carey, president and founder of FCI. “With the combination of FCI’s wireless networking solutions and Trimble’s extensive offerings in industrial markets, we are excited to be able to provide a more integrated solution for the marketplace.”
